The Mobile You

March 5th, 2010 by Peter
  • Snowstorms in the northeast knocking out power for days?
  • Cold spells in southeast affecting citrus crops?
  • Mudslides on the west coast forcing people to leave their homes?

In terms of weather conditions, February 2010 will go down in the history books as both memorable and unfortunately, catastrophic. Nearly every region in the United States had to deal with some type of extreme weather pattern.  And it made headlines across the country.

While the typical concerns apply (i.e. how this will affect the people in these regions), I thought about it from a technological standpoint. A few questions came to mind:

  • How is your business affected when Mother Nature isn’t kind and you lose power?
  • Have you audited your technology capabilities to see if you can still conduct business in “less than optimal” conditions?
  • Are you equipped – or has your company equipped you – with the tools needed to continue business as usual, even when it’s not?

A couple of weeks ago, I commented that mobile was the way to go.  I still believe that. Wireless technologies, such as laptops, netbooks, smartphones, and iPads, will help companies of any size increase efficiencies and better manage costs. Utilizing the latest mobile technologies to create a virtual office is the key to success.

I speak with several service buyers and professionals who do most of their work outside of a classic office environment.  By taking advantage of the latest technology these individuals/organizations are in constant contact with their customers, have the ability to respond quickly to their needs, and conduct business as usual, no matter what the current conditions are outside.

But now I’m interested in hearing what your thoughts are on creating that virtual office. What will be the next big idea in mobile that will transform how we do business?

I was talking a look at the ipad on Apple.com and I noticed that the Applecare section for the ipad only said it is only 2 years. Does anyone know why is not lasting 3 years like every other Apple product? Ok, well the iphone/ipods now says it is 2 years too on the Applecare. When did they all change to 2 years and not 3?

[...] Mobility is key. With my Blackberry, mobile computer, air cards, and the ability to do remote faxing, I am constantly connected. Using these tools, not only helps me stay connected at all times, but it makes life easier when I go back to the office. [...]

    Peter,

I agree mobility is the way to go and I believe remote IT support is the next big thing. Mobile Tech’s do not have as much over head, and so we can pass on the savings to our customer’s but, mobility does have it’s down falls when it comes to servicing residental or comercial users. I have found with some companies the are willing to internalize IT support until everything is back into order and with residential user it’s a trust thing. Do I really want to let a complete stranger into our home? So, I am busy trying to build trust and a good relationship with my clients, so they will keep using my technical expertise.
